Magnolia macrophylla

One of my favorite trees! Common name is Big Leaf Magnolia. This is probably the easiest tree to identify. Walking along the forest floor it stands out blatantly. It’s leaf size alone gives it away. The leaf can reach up to three feet in length! This tree has both the biggest leaf and simple flower of any native North American tree.

The leaves are glaucous underneath and are alternately arranged. The leaf base is auriculate and is what defines this species. The last photo is a close up of the leaf base. The trunk is smooth and can be single or multi-trunked.

One of my favourites ^^*
